NYT: Investors lose confidence in US amid Trump policies
Investors are increasingly moving away from American assets amid economic turbulence linked to US President Donald Trump’s policies, The New York Times (NYT) reports.
According to the newspaper, investment strategies were previously based on the principle of US primacy, but a new approach—dubbed “Sell America”—is gaining traction in global markets.
The shift emerged following the imposition of US tariffs, which triggered a decline in stocks and bonds last spring.
Other factors fueling investor pessimism include Trump administration criticism of the Federal Reserve, threats of a trade war with Europe, and the perceived unpredictability of White House policies.
Over the past month, the “Sell America” strategy has contributed to a weaker dollar, rising precious metal prices, and a slowdown in stock market growth, according to NYT.
The phrase “Sell America” is used by market strategists to describe periods when global investors reduce holdings of US assets and seek diversification in other regions amid geopolitical and policy unpredictability.
