Official: Iraq draws red line against foreign military use of its soil
The Iraqi government has affirmed its firm opposition to the use of its land, airspace, or waters as a base for military operations against other states, citing concerns over regional security and stability.
In an official statement on Facebook, the Prime Minister’s media office said Iraq’s position is guided by the constitution and longstanding government policy, which emphasise respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in the affairs of other countries.
“Iraq is fully committed to preventing its territory from being used in a manner that threatens the security and stability of neighbouring countries, or from being drawn into conflicts that do not serve the interests of the Iraqi people,” said Sabah Al-Numan, spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The statement called on all parties in the region to exercise restraint, prioritise dialogue, and seek peaceful solutions to disputes in line with international law and the United Nations Charter.
Trump has repeatedly pledged support for protesters in Iran, where nationwide anti-government demonstrations have been ongoing since last month.
Iranian authorities have accused the US and Israel of fomenting the unrest, describing it as “riots” and acts of “terrorism”.
Official casualty and detention figures have not been released. However, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) estimates that more than 2,600 people have died, including both protesters and security forces.
