In May 2023, Ammar returned to Gaza after more than 40 years of exile. His return was highly symbolic, marking the end of a long period of displacement that began after his release in the 1983 Jibril prisoner exchange deal. Following his release, Ammar was deported to Sudan, where he settled until the onset of the country's civil war.
Upon his return to Gaza, Ammar was warmly welcomed by local officials and residents. Yahya Sinwar, leader of Hamas in Gaza, personally greeted him, with the two exchanging hugs and praises. His return was seen as a significant event for many in the region, reinforcing his longstanding role in Palestinian politics.
Ammar's death following the Israeli attack has sent shockwaves through Gaza, with many expressing grief over the loss of a prominent and respected figure in the Palestinian resistance. His passing comes amid heightened tensions in the region, as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to escalate.
