OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens with stronger safety measures
OpenAI has launched a version of ChatGPT designed for teenagers, introducing parental controls and stronger safeguards around potentially harmful content.
The new “ChatGPT for Teens” mode is automatically activated when a user is estimated to be under 18, or identifies themselves as aged between 13 and 17, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
It limits conversations involving high-risk subjects, including self-harm, violence and eating disorders. OpenAI says the system will default to the safer setting when it is uncertain about a user's age.
Parents will be able to set “Quiet Hours”, manage certain account settings and receive notifications when their teenager discusses sensitive topics.
The company said the new mode is also designed to support learning. It includes tools such as Study Mode, homework reminders, quizzes and visualisations intended to help students learn rather than simply provide answers.
The move comes as technology companies face growing scrutiny over the potential risks posed by AI chatbots to young people.
OpenAI is already facing lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT harmed children, while experts have raised concerns about teenagers using AI systems for emotional support and mental health advice.
The company said AI should “expand educational opportunity” and that ChatGPT for Teens was designed to provide support outside the classroom when help may not be available.
Research by the Pew Research Center found that searching for information and getting help with homework were the most common uses of AI among US teenagers, followed by entertainment and leisure.
