Orthodox Christians across Azerbaijan celebrate Christmas PHOTO
Orthodox Christians across Azerbaijan are marking Christmas today, on January 7, with festive services held in all Orthodox churches throughout the country.
This sacred day holds profound significance for believers, symbolizing mutual respect, wisdom, and a time to set aside differences, embracing joy and unity, Caliber.Az reports.
In preparation for the holiday, Orthodox Christians observe a 40-day Nativity Fast, refraining from consuming eggs, meat, dairy products, and alcohol, with fish allowed on specific occasions. The fast begins on November 28 and concludes on January 7. It is traditionally referred to as the "Philip’s Fast" (Filippovka) because it starts the day after the Feast of St. Philip.
The Christmas feast begins with the appearance of the first star in the evening sky, symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem. The Holy Evening commences with prayer and the lighting of the Christmas candle, setting a solemn and joyful tone for the celebrations.
A special Christmas service was held today at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baku. The church was filled with worshippers, coming together in prayer and celebration to mark this joyous occasion.
