Over 100 dead in Myanmar floods following typhoon
Spokesperson for Myanmar's State Administration Council Zaw Min Tun has announced that more than 100 people died due to flooding caused by Typhoon "Yagi".
“Across the country, 113 people have died, 64 are missing, and 14 have been injured. Myanmar authorities report that over 320,000 people have been evacuated due to the flooding of residential areas. Rescue services are searching for the missing,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
In Myanmar, since September 11, extensive flooding has affected low-lying areas in Mandalay and Bago regions, eastern Shan State, and the capital, Naypyitaw. Military officials have assessed the damage and reviewed the ongoing rescue, relief, and recovery operations. They have been directed to seek international assistance for the affected areas, as other countries hit by the storm have done.
The full extent of the damage remains unclear, but there are concerns that the death toll could increase significantly. Myanmar regularly faces severe weather during the monsoon season, with Cyclone Nargis in 2008 being a particularly devastating event, causing over 138,000 deaths. At that time, the military government initially resisted international aid and later tightly controlled its distribution with minimal oversight.
The recent floods have damaged approximately 24 bridges, 375 school buildings, one Buddhist monastery, five dams, four pagodas, 14 electrical transformers, 456 lampposts, and over 65,000 homes in central and eastern Myanmar.
