Over 500 displaced amid flooding in Russia’s Dagestan region

13 April 2026 14:21

More than 500 people are staying in temporary shelters after widespread flooding in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan, according to the country’s Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Officials said more than 500 residential buildings remain inundated across seven settlements, with a total of 544 people, including 182 children, currently housed in emergency accommodation, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

The ministry said no flooding has been reported in the neighbouring Chechnya.

Emergency response teams have begun disinfecting wells in affected areas. In the Derbent district, 100 rescuers and 30 units of equipment from the Don Rescue Center have been deployed since April 11. In the Khasavyurt district, an additional 100 specialists and 28 units of equipment from the Tula Rescue Center are expected to arrive.

Alexander Kurenkov, head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, said authorities are focusing on providing assistance to residents and ensuring timely financial support for those affected.

“Our main task now is to provide comprehensive support to the population. President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin is paying the utmost attention to this. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations is assisting the regions in organizing the prompt disbursement of payments,” the ministry quoted him as saying.

Assessment commissions are continuing their work in the affected regions, while additional personnel are being trained to support recovery efforts. Authorities said the flood situation is currently stable, with sufficient resources in place to manage the aftermath.
