Pakistan army chief heads to Tehran with Gulf talks message

21 May 2026 12:07

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Asim Munir, is set to travel to Tehran to deliver a message to Iranian officials regarding negotiations aimed at resolving tensions in the Persian Gulf region, according to Iranian MP Fida Hossein Maleki.

“Pakistan’s Army Chief [Asim] Munir is arriving in Tehran today to deliver a special message to Iranian officials,” the Iranian lawmaker said, as quoted by Al Mayadeen. No details regarding the contents of the message were disclosed.

Pakistan intensified diplomatic efforts to accelerate stalled U.S.-Iran peace negotiations, amid warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump that military action against Iran could resume within days if Tehran fails to provide what he called “the right answers.”

Six weeks after a fragile ceasefire took hold, negotiations remain deadlocked, while disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to fuel concerns over global energy supplies and rising inflation.

Iran said it was reviewing Washington’s latest responses after submitting a new proposal this week. Tehran’s demands reportedly include sanctions relief, compensation for war damage, release of frozen assets and U.S. troop withdrawals — conditions previously rejected by Washington.

Trump said the situation could escalate rapidly if diplomacy fails, while reiterating that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards responded by warning that any renewed attack could trigger a broader regional conflict.

Meanwhile, Iran has partially reopened the Strait of Hormuz under a newly declared “controlled maritime zone,” allowing selected vessels to transit with authorisation. Shipping traffic remains far below pre-war levels despite a modest increase in tanker movements, including Chinese and South Korean oil shipments.
