Pakistan’s Navy has successfully test-fired its ship-launched P-282 SMASH ballistic missile from a Zulfiqar-class frigate.
The Navy conducted a successful trial of the P-282 SMASH anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM), striking a target vessel at sea, TurDef reports.
The missile was launched from a Chinese-built Zulfiqar-class frigate (Type 053H3) and accurately hit the designated ship target.
The P-282 SMASH represents an unusual approach to naval anti-ship systems due to its ballistic nature. Although larger than conventional anti-ship cruise missiles such as the RGM-84 Harpoon, it is still compatible with most frigate-class platforms.
Thanks to its high speed and near-vertical terminal attack profile, the P-282 SMASH offers a significant penetration and impact advantage, unlike cruise missiles which typically strike from horizontal or oblique angles. However, effective targeting requires continuous updates on the enemy ship’s position during the mid-course phase to ensure reliable guidance.
