Pakistan urges Trump to mediate Taliban tensions, praises his peace efforts
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif called on US President Donald Trump to play a mediating role in easing tensions between Pakistan and its Taliban-controlled northern neighbour, praising Trump’s peace initiatives and expressing openness to his involvement in current negotiations.
Asif lauded Trump’s foreign policy record, particularly his efforts to negotiate peace in conflict zones, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“I think presidents in America have been responsible for wars. This is the first president (Trump) who has stopped wars. In the last 15–20 years, the US has sponsored wars, and he (Trump) is the first president to negotiate peace. If he wants to look into the Pakistan-Afghanistan war, he is most welcome,” Asif stated.
He further claimed that Trump had successfully negotiated peace in “seven wars,” though he did not elaborate on the specifics. Asif’s remarks reflect growing sentiment within some segments of Pakistan’s political and military leadership favouring Trump’s involvement in regional peace efforts.
Islamabad’s leadership has repeatedly expressed admiration for Trump’s approach to international conflict resolution. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir have, on several occasions, nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, portraying him as a leader who sought to end rather than escalate wars.
