Pashinyan backs referendum idea on Armenia’s EU, EAEU future
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has expressed support for a resolution adopted by leaders of four Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states concerning the possibility of holding a referendum in Armenia on the country’s future membership in the EAEU or potential accession to the European Union.
Speaking during his election campaign in the Gegharkunik region, Pashinyan said he had reviewed the document adopted following the Astana summit on May 29, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“I read it. It is a very balanced text, and it turns out that our colleagues from the four countries of the Eurasian Economic Union support the idea of holding a referendum in Armenia on the issue of Armenia’s accession to the EU,” he said.
He added that a referendum would only become meaningful if Armenia formally applies for EU membership.
“You understand, until Armenia actually applies to the EU to become a full member of the European Union, there is simply no substance for a referendum. Until that happens, there will be no referendum. As soon as it happens, there will be a referendum,” Pashinyan added.
Earlier reports indicated that leaders of EAEU member states believe a nationwide referendum should be held in Armenia on the matter, reflecting ongoing debate over Armenia’s geopolitical orientation between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union.
The issue continues to feature prominently in Armenia’s domestic political discourse as the country balances its economic and strategic ties with both blocs.
