Poll: Slovakia’s ruling coalition voters support blocking Russia sanctions
A new public opinion poll in Slovakia indicates that a significant share of voters aligned with the country’s governing coalition oppose additional sanctions against Russia, highlighting deep political divisions over foreign policy.
The survey, conducted by Ipsos for Denník N, found that 64% of supporters of Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Smer party favour blocking new sanctions targeting Moscow. Similar views are held by 60% of voters backing the Voice party and 74% of supporters of the Slovak National Party, both coalition partners.
Across the broader population, approximately one-third of respondents said Slovakia should prevent the adoption of further sanctions against Russia.
In contrast, voters aligned with opposition liberal parties largely support imposing additional measures in response to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The findings underscore a growing divide within Slovak society over how the country should respond to the conflict, with implications for Bratislava’s stance within the European Union on future sanctions policy.
