President Aliyev champions interfaith cooperation to tackle climate change
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has delivered an address to the participants of the Global Summit of Religious Leaders taking place in Baku under the theme "World Religions for a Green Planet," as part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Details of this address were shared on the official website of the Azerbaijani President, Caliber.Az reports.
"I sincerely welcome you to Baku on the occasion of the opening of the Global Summit of Religious Leaders under the slogan “World Religions for a Green Planet,” the head of state said, emphasizing the importance of this gathering in addressing the pressing issues of our time," President Aliyev started his speech.
“Climate change, atmospheric and environmental pollution, droughts and desertification, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, food shortages, and other global environmental problems facing our world today pose a serious threat to the existence and future of humanity,” he continued. “Addressing the climate crisis and issues of environmental security requires the cooperation of world states and the unification of the international community’s efforts at all levels.” He expressed his appreciation for the influential religious leaders gathered for COP events, highlighting their concern for the fate of the planet and their determination to contribute to this vital cause in the spirit of inclusivity.
“The abundant spiritual resources of various faiths and beliefs can stimulate solutions to the existential problems brought about by climate change,” the Azerbaijani leader asserted. “Religious leaders worldwide can play a major role in addressing these challenges.” Aliyev emphasized that it is imperative for faith communities to unite in their efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable practices.
“The unanimous decision to hold COP29 in Azerbaijan is an indicator of high confidence in the international reputation of our country, and this is no coincidence,” he remarked. “Azerbaijan has joined a number of conventions and agreements related to environmental problems, established cooperation with various countries, and adopted multifaceted activity programs in this field.” He pointed out that effective institutional mechanisms and an investment environment have been established through a comprehensive legislative framework for environmental protection. “Important steps are currently being taken to implement ‘green energy’ projects, utilize alternative and renewable energy, and evaluate and eliminate the negative effects on the environment,” he added, noting that the year 2024 has been declared the “Green World Solidarity Year” in Azerbaijan.
“Enhancing international security, peace, and calm in the world is one of the important factors in combating climate change and environmental problems in general,” the head of state stated. He reflected on Azerbaijan's recent past, noting, “In the recent past, our country was involved in an unjust war, having been subjected to groundless territorial claims, and had to experience the severe consequences of this bloody conflict.” He invited the participants to witness firsthand the painful aftermath of the conflict during their visit to Karabakh, where they will observe the ongoing reconstruction efforts focused on restoring ecological balance through the principles of a green economy and renewable energy.
“It has already become a tradition for Azerbaijan to host prestigious events such as the Global Summit of Religious Leaders, where human problems are discussed,” he said, believing that the effective activities of this Summit will further enhance Azerbaijan's status as a space for inter-civilizational dialogue. “Your solidarity, wise suggestions, and recommendations for the sake of a green world will support us in achieving our common goals,” he emphasized, reinforcing the collaborative spirit necessary for addressing global environmental challenges.
“I am confident that the Summit dedicated to these fateful problems will facilitate constructive exchanges of views and discussions on the establishment of a platform for inter-religious cooperation within the framework of the COP,” he asserted. “Azerbaijan, the land of tolerance and multiculturalism, is the most suitable place for this,” he declared, underscoring the nation’s commitment to fostering dialogue among diverse faiths.
“Once again, I wish you all the best and every success in your benevolent activities for the future of mankind,” he concluded, urging the leaders to work together toward a greener, more sustainable planet.
