President: Egypt supports Syria’s unity and condemns any foreign attacks
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has firmly stated that Egypt rejects any attacks on Syrian territory. His comments came during a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Cairo on the sidelines of the Arab League summit.
According to a statement from al-Sisi's press office, the two leaders met for the first time, where al-Sisi emphasized Egypt’s strong support for the Syrian people and their aspirations, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“Egypt attaches great importance to supporting the Syrian people and realizing their aspirations,” he said.
The Egyptian president also underlined the need to consider the will and choices of the Syrian people in order to ensure the country’s stability and development. He further stressed the importance of launching an inclusive political process that would encompass all segments of Syrian society without excluding any party.
“We favour preserving Syria's unity and territorial integrity, and we condemn any attacks on Syrian soil,” al-Sisi reiterated.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who took office as president of the Arab Republic of Syria in late January for a transitional period, responded by highlighting the importance of fostering fraternal relations between Syria and Egypt, as well as other Arab countries.
“We attach great importance to opening a new page of fraternal relations with Egypt and other Arab countries,” said al-Sharaa. He also expressed his desire for closer cooperation between Egypt and Syria to protect the interests of both nations and the broader Arab world.
He recognized Egypt’s role in supporting Arab unity and the territorial integrity of regional states, as well as promoting regional stability.
This summit on March 4 marked the first official meeting of Arab leaders in which Syria was represented by al-Sharaa, following his appointment in January.
The extraordinary Arab League Summit was convened at the request of Palestine, particularly in response to recent statements by former US President Donald Trump, who suggested that Washington might consider long-term ownership of the Gaza Strip and the resettlement of Palestinians from the enclave to other countries in the region.
During the summit, Arab leaders unanimously adopted a plan put forward by Egypt for the reconstruction of Gaza and issued a final declaration in support of the region’s future.
