President Erdogan: Türkiye resolves global IT failure issues

21 July 2024 16:31

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that Türkiye successfully mitigated the effects of a global computer failure that occurred on July 19.

Speaking on the matter, President Erdogan reassured the public that Türkiye has managed to resolve the crisis without significant disruptions. While acknowledging minor lingering issues, he emphasized that the country's response has been effective compared to the widespread challenges faced globally, Caliber.Az reports citing the Turkish media.

"We have managed to overcome this crisis without major problems. Turkish Airlines and all other relevant organisations and departments have swiftly implemented necessary measures. Although some minor disruptions persist, Türkiye is in a stable and improved position," President Erdogan stated.

The global computer failure on July 19 led to Turkish Airlines canceling more than 80 domestic and international flights. In response, the airline has allowed passengers to freely exchange tickets until July 25 to accommodate affected travelers.

Additionally, Türkiye experienced difficulties on the same day with access to banking services and the operation of numerous electronic platforms, highlighting the widespread impact of the IT disruption.

A global technology outage caused by a faulty software update grounded flights, knocked media outlets offline, and disrupted hospitals, small businesses and government offices on July 19, highlighting the fragility of a digitized world dependent on just a handful of providers.

At the heart of the massive disruption is CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm that provides software to thousands of companies worldwide.

Air travelers became the face of the widespread technology outage as they posted pictures on social media of crowds of people stranded at airports in Europe and the United States.

In the US, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Allegiant Air had all their flights grounded for varying lengths of time July 19 morning. Airlines said the outage hit many systems, including those used to check in passengers and calculate aircraft weight — necessary information for planes to take off.
