Professor: Armenians always third-class citizens for West

Doctor of Political Sciences at the US Stanford University Arthur Khachikian has said that the Western democracy is far from ideal.

“We can agree with liberals that democracy is very good, we all want democracy. However, firstly, Western democracy is far from ideal. There is also corruption, lobbying, the power of big money, big corporations. The global corporations keep these governments under their control. We shouldn't be naïve,” Khachikian said in an interview with the Armenian media, Caliber.Az reports.

“Of course, democracy is very good, but the question is what will be done to spread democracy. Just remember the situation in the US during the Cold War. The whole world wanted to live the way Americans live because without using military force the US achieved its goals. The US made you want to imitate its way of life and ideological values. However, this has changed radically as the balance of power has changed. The US began to spread its ideas and democracy by force. This was a tragic mistake. Not every country was ready to become a Western democracy, for example, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya. It was a very short-sighted strategy,” the professor noted.

“In this context, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell’s statements that the global hegemony of the West ended with the conflict in Ukraine and the beginning of the conflict in the Gaza Strip is a paradox, but it is true. I can’t say that everything was over in Ukraine, but everything was already over in Gaza. The West has shown that its entire system of international law is a lie. There is such a democracy, human rights have no authority. The Armenians have always been third-class people for them,” he added.
