Representatives of EU institutions witness reconstruction work in Azerbaijan's Aghdam
A delegation consisting of representatives from European Union institutions have travelled to the Azerbaijani city of Aghdam to observe the progress at the ongoing reconstruction and construction work.
This was revealed by the Head of the European Union mission to Azerbaijan, Ambassador Peter Michalko, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Michalko commented on the group's visit to Aghdam which took place on April 2, reaffirming to journalists the European Union's support to Azerbaijan in the demining process. "The return of life to these lands and the opportunity for people to live here again is of great significance," the EU diplomat acknowledged.
He further pledged that the European Union would continue its cooperation towards achieving peace and stability throughout the region. The city of Aghdam has tragically earned the nickname of "the Hiroshima of the Caucasus" in the past due to its wide-ranging destruction it had to endure during it's illegal occupation by ethnic-Armenian seperatist forces.
In the 4 years since its liberation from occupation, many positive changes have already taken place in the city, such as the opening of Aghdam Juma Mosque after restoration. Other notable landmarks across the Aghdam district include the 19th-century Khanoglu tomb, the Panah Ali Khan tomb, the Panah Ali Khan palace as well as the Sardaba and Hatem Malik castles that date back to the 15th century and the Shahbulag Mosque.
