Rescue operations underway after major bus accident in Mitzpe Ramon, Israel
At least 22 people were injured when a passenger bus overturned near Mitzpe Ramon in southern Israel, initial reports say. Emergency crews successfully extricated two passengers trapped inside the vehicle, both of whom are in moderate condition.
Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) medical teams treated victims on-site, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The current tally of casualties comprises two individuals with moderate injuries, sustaining serious but non-life-threatening wounds; fifteen with minor injuries, predominantly bruises and shock; and five under evaluation, including the two passengers who had been trapped and subsequently rescued.
Fire and rescue teams spent nearly an hour freeing the pinned passengers before handing them over to medical personnel for urgent care.
Given the remote location and number of casualties, the Israeli Air Force and MDA dispatched helicopters to the scene. Those with more serious injuries are being airlifted to Soroka Medical Centre in Beersheba to bypass the winding desert roads and ensure rapid treatment.
Police have closed portions of the route near Mitzpe Ramon to allow emergency vehicles and aircraft access. Commuters in the area are advised to expect significant delays. Authorities are investigating whether the accident was caused by mechanical failure or road conditions.
Emergency services continue to monitor and treat victims, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
