RIA Novosti: Opening of Turkish-Armenian border not under discussion
Talks on reopening the Turkish-Armenian border are not currently taking place, though the negotiation process on normalising relations between Ankara and Yerevan is ongoing, a Turkish diplomatic source told RIA Novosti.
“At the moment, the focus is on normalising relations rather than specifically opening the border. This issue will depend on the progress of the process — no concrete timeline has been set yet,” the source said.
Türkiye and Armenia have no diplomatic relations, and their border has been closed since 1993 following Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region.
After the 2020 Karabakh conflict, both sides launched cautious normalisation efforts, appointing special envoys to facilitate dialogue.
Ankara has welcomed Yerevan’s recent calls for regional peace and cooperation, yet despite limited agreements allowing crossings for diplomats and third-country nationals, a full reopening of the border remains out of reach.
