Right-wing AfD beats Chancellor Scholz' party in early polls
Germany's right-wing party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), has surpassed Chancellor Olaf Scholz' party in latest polls.
A sociological survey conducted by YouGov has published those findings ahead of the February 2025 snap-elections in the German Bundestag, Caliber.Az reports.
According to the results, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) received only 15% of votes when respondents were asked who they will vote for while the AfD, a party traditionally on the fringes of German politics due to their right-wing rhetorics, yielded 23%. The pollster notes that the AfD's rating has increased by 4 percentage points compared to the data from a week ago.
Surprisingly, the party receiving the most votes in the survey is former Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic bundle (CDU/CSU) with 29%. The fraction, led by Friedrich Merz, has not been part of the former government's "Traffic Light" coalition which has announced snap elections after their breakdown in late 2024.
