Romanian president to resign following impeachment crisis
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has announced his resignation, effective February 12, following an impeachment procedure initiated in the country's parliament.
Iohannis condemned the move, calling it "unjustified" and warning that it would lead Romania into a political crisis, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
"Today, the Romanian parliament initiated the procedure to remove the president from office. In a few days, parliament will vote on my resignation, and Romania will be plunged into crisis as a referendum on my removal is set to begin," he said.
The president expressed concerns that the decision would divide Romanian society and create confusion abroad.
"Nobody will understand why this action is being taken, especially when preparations for the presidential elections are already underway," Iohannis remarked. "Essentially, the world will mock us."
In an effort to avoid further turmoil, Iohannis stated, "To spare Romania and its citizens from this crisis, from this pointless and negative turn of events, I am stepping down from my position as president." He confirmed that he would vacate office on February 12.
