Russia acts to arrange rail freight to Armenia in transit via Azerbaijan — official
Russian Railways (RZD) and regional partners are currently working on organising the transit of Russian goods to Armenia via Azerbaijani territory, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Overchuk told journalists, according to TASS.
“The Azerbaijani side has confirmed to us the possibility of using its railways for the transit of Russian products to Armenia through Azerbaijan. So, in this sense, we are seeing very encouraging progress,” Overchuk said.
He added that Russian Railways, together with partners in the region, is now working on how to organise these shipments.
“At the same time, relevant instructions have been issued through the Ministry of Agriculture to develop this new logistics route,” he noted.
On October 21, 2025, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that Azerbaijan had lifted all restrictions on the transit of goods to Armenia. This decision marked a significant step toward peace between the two nations. The first shipment under this new arrangement was a consignment of Kazakh grain, transported via Azerbaijan and Georgia to Armenia—the first such transit since the Soviet era.
