Russia, China, Iran eye diplomatic approach to Tehran’s nuclear programme

21 February 2026 14:18

Russia, China and Iran are continuing to closely coordinate their positions on Iran’s nuclear programme, emphasising that the issue should be resolved exclusively through political and diplomatic means, according to Russia’s envoy to international organisations in Vienna.

In an interview with the Russian newspaper Izvestia, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to international organisations in Vienna, said the permanent missions of the three countries maintain close cooperation and regularly align their approaches.

He stated that the permanent representatives of Russia, China and Iran recently met with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Vienna. During the meeting, they presented what he described as a unified and coordinated position aimed at reducing the risks of potential crisis situations surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.

According to Ulyanov, particular emphasis was placed on the need to address all existing issues through exclusively political and diplomatic channels, rather than through confrontation or escalation.

He added that the diplomatic missions of Russia, China and Iran in Vienna would continue to cooperate closely on matters related to Iran’s nuclear file.
