Russia confirms readiness for second US summit in Budapest
Russia has confirmed its readiness to hold a second Russian-American summit in Budapest, provided it builds on well-prepared outcomes from the Alaska meeting.
Speaking at a briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the country remains open to talks, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“As Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also emphasised, we are still ready to hold a second Russian-American summit in Budapest, if it genuinely draws on the thoroughly prepared results of Alaska,” she stated.
Zakharova added that dialogue between Moscow and Washington is ongoing, noting that the foreign ministers of both countries recognise the need for regular communication. She said contacts would continue.
“Since the arrival of the new US administration, we have felt a significant desire and willingness on their part to resume dialogue. The process is underway, although not as quickly as we would like, which is evident and which we comment on regularly,” she said.
Regarding interactions between the Russian and US foreign ministers, Zakharova noted that there had been no contacts since the Anchorage summit and a subsequent phone call.
“There is an understanding between the heads of our foreign services of the need for regular communication. This is important for discussing the Ukrainian issue and advancing the bilateral agenda. These contacts will continue whenever necessary,” she added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump met on August 15, 2025, at the Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, in a summit largely focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Their discussion included the possibility of a nuclear arms-control deal, as Putin noted “sincere efforts” from Washington to reduce hostilities.
The U.S. delegation featured high-level officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA Director John Ratcliffe. Although the meeting lasted for almost three hours, no formal ceasefire agreement was reached.
