Russia demands concrete solution to Ukraine conflict, rejects temporary ceasefire
Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, has emphasized that Russia cannot accept mere discussions about a ceasefire as a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
He called for concrete legal agreements that would ensure Russia's security and the legitimate interests of its neighbours, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
In an interview with both Russian and international media, Lavrov made it clear that while much has already been said on the matter, including by President Vladimir Putin during various public addresses, empty talks are insufficient.
"We cannot be satisfied with just discussions about a ceasefire. What we are hearing now is talk about a ceasefire to buy time for further military preparations in Ukraine, such as additional mobilization and the continuation of arms supplies," Lavrov stated.
Lavrov underscored that a ceasefire, in his view, would lead nowhere. "A ceasefire is a road to nowhere," he remarked. "What we need are final, binding legal agreements that ensure the security of the Russian Federation and address the legitimate security concerns of our neighbours. These agreements must be internationally recognized and legally enforceable, guaranteeing that they cannot be violated."
The minister's comments reflect ongoing concerns within the Russian government regarding the lack of a comprehensive resolution to the conflict, and a desire to secure long-term stability through formal agreements rather than temporary ceasefires.
