Russia dismisses EU aid package for Armenia as ineffective
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk has dismissed the significance of a planned European Union financial support package for Armenia, saying it would have no meaningful economic impact.
Speaking to Interfax, Overchuk said the proposed assistance of around €50 million would be insufficient.
“This solves absolutely nothing. These are not the right figures. Our trade volumes (with Armenia – ed.) are completely different; I don’t even want to comment on this,” he said.
His remarks came after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU is preparing financial support for Armenia in response to what she described as economic coercion from Russia.
“I spoke with Nikol Pashinyan about Russia’s recent restrictions targeting Armenia.
This is nothing short of economic coercion, and it is unacceptable.
Europe stands firmly with Armenia. We are preparing a support package,” von der Leyen said in a post on X.
