Russia explores floating nuclear power options with Iran
Moscow is in discussions with Tehran over the potential construction of floating nuclear power plants, alongside conventional large and small-scale reactors, Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation, confirmed.
In an interview with Russia-1, Likhachev noted that, over the summer, Russian and Iranian officials exchanged agreements on high-capacity nuclear projects, Caliber.Az reports.
In parallel, work is ongoing on a memorandum for smaller nuclear plants, including floating designs that could be deployed in Iran’s more remote coastal areas.
“This is also of interest to our partners, as Iran has coastal regions suitable for floating solutions in remote areas. This is a more targeted approach and, in terms of timing, will also be faster than building a large station. Therefore, we are offering Iran a comprehensive solution covering both large and small capacity projects, including possible floating variants. Iranian colleagues are now actively discussing this internally,” Likhachev said.
Highlighting ongoing progress in Iran’s nuclear sector, Likhachev noted that the first unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant has already generated approximately 75 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
