Russia, Iran move toward joint solar power projects in Caspian region
Russia and Iran are preparing to launch joint projects in the renewable energy sector in the near future, including the turnkey construction of solar power plants with a total capacity of at least 100 megawatts, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev said.
According to Russian media, he announced the plans on the sidelines of a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Tsivilev noted that Moscow and Tehran are actively deepening cooperation in renewable energy sources, particularly in solar generation, and are expected to move soon to the practical implementation stage. The parties are also discussing the involvement of Russian companies in the construction of solar and wind power facilities in Iran, as well as mechanisms for attracting investment based on long-term contracts.
“Russia is interested in developing cooperation in the renewable energy sector. Russian companies have accumulated extensive practical experience and possess the necessary expertise to implement large-scale renewable energy projects,” Tsivilev said.
He emphasised that Russian companies have the capabilities required to deliver major green energy initiatives, which both sides view as one of the priority areas of bilateral cooperation, including within the Caspian region.
