Russia shifts language on “unfriendly countries,” FM says
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that Moscow is gradually moving away from using the term “unfriendly countries,” stressing instead that tensions exist with certain governments rather than entire states.
Speaking at a press conference focused on preparations for the upcoming Intervision contest, Lavrov was answering the questions of journalists, who asked to clarify what performers from so-called "unfriendly countries" would need to do to participate, noting that representatives from both the United States and Europe are slated to take part, Caliber.Az reports via TASS.
The foreign minister explained that while the term “unfriendly countries” still appears in Russian legislation, President Vladimir Putin recently emphasised that Russia does not view entire nations as hostile, but rather identifies countries whose governments act against Russian interests
Lavrov also noted that he would not single out individuals who were previously barred from participating in the contest, citing respect for their personal circumstances.
However, he affirmed that performers wishing to attend the competition would always be welcome in Russia.
