Russia warns against equating Soviet Union with Nazi Germany
Russia will oppose attempts to falsify history and to distort the truth about World War II, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in comments to journalists.
According to her, as part of efforts to counter historical falsification, Moscow is disseminating objective information and taking steps to consolidate supporters.
Zakharova drew attention to the European Parliament’s adoption of a series of what she described as “revisionist resolutions” that imply “equal responsibility of two totalitarian regimes” for the outbreak of World War II. Attempts to equate the Soviet Union with the Third Reich contradict the verdict of the Nuremberg Tribunal and the UN Charter and undermine the very foundations of the post-war world order, she stressed.
“The ‘Observatory on History Teaching’ operating under the Council of Europe has taken it upon itself to actively Ukrainize what remains in educational guidelines regarding Russia’s role in the history of the continent and the world as a whole,” the diplomat said.
She added that what she described as “uniform brainwashing” in Europe begins as early as school.
