Russian army to replace Uragan MLRS with high-precision Tornado-S missile launchers
The Uragan multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) currently used in the Russian army will be gradually replaced by the more modern and long-range Tornado-S systems.
This decision was made by the Russian Defense Ministry after studying the experience of special operations, Izvestia newspaper reports, citing sources in the military department.
In the first stage, the new equipment will be supplied to the district reactive brigades and artillery brigades of combined arms armies. Then the Tornado-S systems will be used in artillery regiments of motorized rifle and tank divisions.
The publication's sources noted that modernization of the Uragan system presents certain technical difficulties, while the Tornado-S will significantly expand the capabilities of the Russian artillery.
Earlier, the Rostec state corporation said that the Tornado-S MLRSs are capable of covering large areas and hitting targets with high accuracy. Thanks to the new guided projectiles, the range of MLRSs has increased from 90 to 120 kilometres, which brings them closer to tactical missile systems.
