Russian deputy FM expresses hope to avoid nuclear weapon use
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has suggested that Russia might deploy nuclear-capable missiles in response to Western actions.
He emphasised in an interview with Russia-1 TV channel that the final decision would be made by the supreme commander and military experts, Caliber.Az reports.
"I confirm that if the supreme commander [Russian President Vladimir Putin] and our military officials determine that special munitions are required on certain platforms, then that’s what will happen. However, they must make this decision based on a range of factors. I admit that there could come a moment when this becomes necessary," Ryabkov responded when asked about the possibility of deploying Russian nuclear missiles in response to similar actions by the West.
Ryabkov also noted that Russia continues closely monitoring the actions of NATO and other Western countries.
"We are in constant contact with our military analysts and strategists. If necessary, we are prepared to take appropriate measures to protect our country and our allies," he added.
Additionally, the diplomat emphasised the importance of maintaining strategic balance and preventing an arms race.
"Russia has always advocated for dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. However, amid the West’s increasing aggression, we are forced to consider all possible scenarios," Ryabkov stated.
Amidst escalating international tensions and increasing sanctions pressure on Russia, the topic of nuclear deterrence is becoming relevant again. In recent months, there have been numerous statements from both Russian and Western officials regarding the potential revision of strategic plans and weaponry.
"We hope that common sense will prevail and we can avoid further escalation. However, Russia is prepared to defend its interests and security by any necessary means," Ryabkov concluded.
