Russian military restores damaged letters at Mother Armenia memorial
Russian servicemen are restoring gold-colored letters that were torn off the names of cities awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union during World War II at the Mother Armenia memorial in Gyumri.
Chairman of the Council of Veterans of the 102nd Military Base, civilian employee and former deputy political officer Ashot Karapetyan, said residents were upset by the incident, noting that Gyumri has always been seen as a symbol of Armenian-Russian friendship, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
“This is a desecration of the memory of our grandfathers and fathers who fought side by side against fascism. I believe that the Armenian authorities and law enforcement agencies will find those responsible. And they will be punished accordingly,” he noted.
Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Armenia also expressed outrage over the vandalism at the Mother Armenia memorial dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
