Russian nuclear submarine fires cruise missile in Barents Sea drill
The nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine Arkhangelsk has carried out a strike with an Oniks cruise missile against a simulated enemy in the Barents Sea, the press service of Russia’s Northern Fleet stated.
The Fleet's press service noted that the Oniks missile launch against a naval target located about 200 kilometres away was carried out from a submerged position. The target was hit directly, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Konstantin Kabantsov emphasised that during the preparation and execution of the launch, the crew of the Arkhangelsk demonstrated professionalism and naval expertise.
The press service added that the area designated for the exercise was closed in advance to civilian ships and aircraft, with vessels of the Kola Flotilla providing security.
For the record, the Arkhangelsk is a Project 885M Yasen-M nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine. It was laid down in 2015, launched in late November 2023, and entered service with the Russian Navy in December last year.
