Senator: No negotiation possible with Hamas, Israel likely to take control of Gaza

28 July 2025 12:41

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham believes Israel cannot safely negotiate an end to the conflict with Hamas and suggests Israel will take control of Gaza, comparing it to the U.S. occupations of Tokyo and Berlin after World War II.

Republican of South Carolina, stated in an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that his view that Israel has realised “that they can’t achieve a goal of ending the war with Hamas that would be satisfactory to the safety of Israel,” Caliber.Az reports.

He added, “I think President Trump has come to believe, and I certainly have come to believe, there’s no way you’re going to negotiate an end of this war with Hamas.”

Commenting on Israel’s possible future actions, Graham said, “They’re going to do in Gaza what we did in Tokyo and Berlin, take the place by force and start over again, presenting a better future for the Palestinians, hopefully having the Arabs take over the West Bank and Gaza.”

His remarks come amid increasing international concern over a worsening hunger crisis in Gaza, where the Gaza Health Ministry reports at least 133 deaths due to starvation. On Sunday, Israel announced a temporary pause in fighting in parts of Gaza to allow aid deliveries.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously indicated that Israel was “moving toward full control” of Gaza. Ceasefire negotiations have recently stalled, with the US withdrawing its negotiating team from talks in Qatar.

When asked if a Gaza takeover would mean hostages would not be returned alive, Graham responded, “I hope not.”

He added, “I think there are people maybe in the Hamas organisation that would accept safe passage if they release the hostages. If I were Israel, I’d make that offer to Hamas fighters: ‘You can leave safely. We want our hostages back.’”

In a separate matter, Graham also renewed calls for a special counsel to investigate claims by Republicans that former President Barack Obama attempted to influence intelligence assessments concerning Russian interference in the 2016 election.

These allegations gained attention after Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard accused Obama of participating in a “treasonous conspiracy” to harm Donald Trump’s campaign. Obama’s spokesperson dismissed the claims as “bizarre allegations” and “a weak attempt at distraction.”

Graham said, “the best way to handle this is if there is evidence of a crime being committed, or suspected evidence of a crime being committed, create a special counsel to look at it.”

Previous investigations, including one led by special counsel John Durham in 2023, had criticised some FBI personnel for a “serious lack of analytical rigor” regarding the Russia probe. Meanwhile, a 2020 Senate report reaffirmed that Russia interfered in the 2016 election, with no dispute from the Republican chair of the Senate intelligence committee.

Critics have suggested Republicans are focusing on Obama to divert attention from criticism of the White House’s handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein. When asked if this was an attempt to rewrite history, Graham said, “At the end of the day, I’m not calling for prosecution against President Obama for treason, but I am calling for an investigation.”
