Slovakia to back NATO summit statement but rule out new military funding for Ukraine
Slovakia will support the final declaration of the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara on 7–8 July but will not participate in further financial contributions for military aid to Ukraine, President Peter Pellegrini has said.
Speaking to the Slovak news portal Denník N, Pellegrini said Bratislava would endorse the summit’s joint statement while maintaining its position against providing additional loans or funding for Ukraine’s military needs.
At the same time, he confirmed that Slovakia would continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, including support for demining equipment and the restoration of energy infrastructure.
Pellegrini said he discussed Slovakia’s position ahead of the summit during consultations on 6 July with Prime Minister Robert Fico and Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár.
The NATO summit in Ankara is expected to focus on defence spending, long-term support for Ukraine, and strengthening alliance cohesion amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
