South Korea discusses regional security, cooperation with US, Ukraine
The South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Jeong Yeon-doo held talks with US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Yew in New York, where the sides discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula and challenges to the global disarmament and non-proliferation regime.
Meeting on the sidelines of a conference related to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, senior officials exchanged views on the regional situation, stressing the importance of coordinating efforts amid growing challenges to the non-proliferation regime, Caliber.Az reports, citing Korean media.
They agreed to maintain close cooperation within the framework of the NPT review conference.
Separately, Jeong held talks with Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Olexandr Mischenko.
The discussions focused on bilateral relations and the regional situation.
The South Korean side reaffirmed its continued support for Ukraine, including humanitarian assistance and participation in reconstruction efforts.
Mischenko expressed gratitude for the support and voiced hope for further development of cooperation.
The parties also agreed to continue coordination on the issue of North Korean prisoners of war in Ukraine in accordance with international law.
In addition, the South Korean diplomat held meetings with representatives of the United Nations and several countries, including Australia, Vietnam, the Netherlands, and Sweden, where discussions focused on expanding cooperation and key international issues.
