Note that, South Korea and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations in 1992, and over the years, their partnership has grown in various areas, including political, economic, and cultural cooperation. The two countries have signed nearly 70 bilateral agreements, with high-level exchanges between their leaders and foreign ministries playing a central role in strengthening ties. These engagements ensure that political relations remain dynamic and cooperative.
Economically, Azerbaijan has become South Korea’s key partner in the South Caucasus. In 2023, bilateral trade reached $428.6 million, with Azerbaijan primarily exporting jet fuel, plant-based products, and fruit juices to South Korea. In return, South Korea exports machinery, vehicles, and technology. South Korean companies have established a significant presence in Azerbaijan, with around 82 operating in sectors like construction, trade, and services.
Cultural exchanges also flourish, with events regularly held in both nations, fostering mutual understanding. Educational cooperation is thriving as well, with student exchanges and academic collaborations, including the teaching of Azerbaijani at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. In terms of collaborative projects, both nations focus on sustainable development, with South Korea playing an essential role in Azerbaijan's modernization efforts, including its post-conflict reconstruction initiatives in the Karabakh region.
