South Korean defence ministry calls reservists to active duty
The South Korean Defence Ministry has ordered the military to be on high alert for potential emergencies, with reservists called to active duty.
"South Korean Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun held a meeting with key military commanders and instructed the entire army to enhance vigilance and readiness for emergencies. Former ministry personnel have also been ordered to return to work," the statement reads, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Military equipment has been observed on the streets of Seoul following the declaration of martial law. According to eyewitnesses, several columns of military vehicles were heading toward the National Assembly building, where protesters are currently attempting to break into the main structure.
Helicopters were also spotted in the skies above Seoul. Reports indicate that officers have ordered all battalions to be on high alert and remain in a state of combat readiness.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the imposition of martial law in the country on December 3. The president noted that this decision was made to eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the free constitutional order.
The South Korean leader has recently held an emergency meeting and subsequently warned of a threat to governmental paralysis due to attempts to initiate his impeachment. This is the reason behind the declaration of martial law in the country.
