South Korean president apologizes amid impeachment proceedings
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has issued a heartfelt apology to the citizens of South Korea over the disruptions caused by his declaration of martial law, which followed the impeachment proceedings initiated by parliament in December 2024.
During his closing remarks at the final session of the Constitutional Court hearings on February 25, Yoon expressed both gratitude and sadness. The court’s verdict on his impeachment is expected by mid-March, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
"I am filled with gratitude, but it pains me that I cannot fulfill my duties despite the trust the people have placed in me," Yoon said in his statement, which was shared by his legal team.
His presidential powers have been suspended while awaiting the court's decision.
"I want to first apologize to my fellow citizens and thank them. Many people did not understand when I declared martial law, only to lift it within a few hours. And even now, there are those who remain confused," Yoon added.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has faced impeachment proceedings following a tumultuous period marked by political tensions and public discontent. In December 2024, the National Assembly of South Korea initiated the impeachment process against Yoon, accusing him of overstepping his executive powers and causing instability within the government. This led to a suspension of his presidential powers, pending a ruling from the Constitutional Court.
