SpaceX's Falcon 9 launches two SES satellites, strengthening worldwide internet access

18 December 2024 18:02

SpaceX has successfully launched two O3b mPOWER communications satellites into orbit for European telecommunications operator SES S.A.

The Falcon 9 rocket carrying the satellites lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on December 17 at 17:26 ET.

In a statement, SpaceX confirmed the successful deployment of both satellites, which were built by Boeing Co., Caliber.Az reports.

The O3b mPOWER satellites are designed to provide high-speed internet and mobile phone services globally.

SES, the Luxembourg-registered company, is the second-largest satellite operator in the world. The company serves commercial, government, and military sectors, including highly secure communications for defence purposes.

This launch marks a significant step in SES’s plans to expand its O3b mPOWER constellation. The satellites, launched into medium Earth orbit at an altitude of 8,000 kilometres, will enhance mobile communications and wireless data coverage worldwide. These new-generation satellites will complement the existing fleet of 20 O3b satellites.

This is the seventh and eighth O3b mPOWER satellite to be launched, following the initial pair sent into orbit in December 2022. SES plans to launch five more satellites in the next 18 months, aiming to complete a total of 13 satellites by 2026.

SES also reported that its second-generation MEO constellation currently supports over 15 million end users as of April 2024. Additionally, SES is negotiating with insurers regarding claims related to previous satellites in the O3b mPOWER series, amounting to approximately $472 million.

The new satellites will significantly improve global coverage, with the constellation providing better connectivity for various services across most countries.
