Spain calls Lebanon conflict “disgrace for humanity”
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares expressed deep concern over the worsening situation in Lebanon, describing it as “a disgrace for humanity."
Albares called on the European Union to assert an independent and sovereign voice in addressing the escalating conflicts across the Middle East, warning that the crises threaten both regional stability and Europe’s core interests, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, Albares emphasized the urgent need for diplomacy over military action. He urged an immediate halt to bombings and missile attacks in the region, stressing that dialogue must take precedence over confrontation.
Albares expressed deep concern over the worsening situation in Lebanon, describing it as “a disgrace for humanity,” with nearly one million people displaced. He strongly warned against the possibility of an Israeli ground invasion, calling it “a huge mistake” that would further destabilize an already fragile region.
The minister also condemned attacks targeting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), calling such actions “a systematic violation of international humanitarian law.” His remarks come as Israeli forces have launched ground operations in southern Lebanon, raising fears of a broader confrontation along the Blue Line.
Albares concluded by urging the EU to amplify its diplomatic engagement and coordinate efforts to de-escalate tensions, underscoring Europe’s responsibility in fostering stability in the Middle East.
