Spokesperson: Ukrainian president received invitation to EU summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received an invitation to the EU summit, but a decision on participation has not yet been made, according to Heorhii Tykhyi, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
“The President has invitations to the NATO, EU, and Group of Seven summits," Caliber.Az quotes Tykhyi as saying per foreign media.
"His participation will be decided closer to the events, depending on security conditions. Usually, bilateral meetings take place at such summits. We are working on this,” he said.
However, he did not specify when and where the EU summit to which Zelenskyy was invited would take place.
Tykhyi emphasised that Ukraine’s participation in the NATO summit is critically important not only from a formal standpoint but also for making decisions that could significantly impact the country’s security.
“For us as a state, the substance of this meeting is important. It is crucial that the summit sends a signal of strength and unity, including regarding Ukraine. Work is currently underway to reach these decisions. Ukraine’s participation depends on this.”
Earlier, it was reported that the United States allegedly opposed inviting Zelenskyy to the NATO summit scheduled for June 24–25 in The Hague (Netherlands).
Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp noted that the final decision on inviting the Ukrainian president to the Alliance summit will be made by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
On May 25, Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said that Zelenskyy had received an invitation to participate in the NATO summit in The Hague, where American leader Donald Trump will also be present.
On June 2, Zelenskyy confirmed that he had received an invitation to this summit, which will take place on June 24-25.
