Stoltenberg slams Trump's 24-hour Ukraine peace plan as path to occupation
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg criticized Donald Trump’s plan to end the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours, arguing that it would result in Ukraine's occupation rather than peace.
In an interview with Politico, Stoltenberg warned that while everyone seeks an end to the war, "the quickest way of ending a war is by losing a war," which would not secure peace but rather lead to Ukraine’s occupation, Caliber.Az reports.
He highlighted that the priority for Western allies is to end the conflict in a way that ensures Ukraine remains a "sovereign, independent state" and to prove to Russia that its objectives cannot be achieved militarily.
Stoltenberg also stressed the importance of continuing U.S. support for Ukraine, regardless of the 2024 election outcome, reminding that Trump himself had previously supplied Ukraine with anti-tank Javelins.
On October 8, it was announced that Stoltenberg would succeed Ambassador Christoph Heusgen as Chairman of the Munich Security Conference after the 61st session in February 2025.
Stoltenberg's decade-long leadership at NATO, from 2014 to 2024, was characterized by his response to global security challenges and efforts to strengthen transatlantic cooperation. His career in diplomacy, which includes roles as Norway’s Prime Minister and key governmental positions, has earned him the American Medal of Freedom in recognition of his contributions to international security.
