Sweden gears up for possible confrontation with Russia

28 February 2025 13:52

As the war in Ukraine continues, Sweden has ramped up its military preparedness, bracing for the possibility of future Russian threat

The ongoing conflict has amplified fears across Europe, particularly in countries near Russia, which are increasingly concerned about the Kremlin's intentions once the war in Ukraine subsides, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

Thomas Nilsson, head of Sweden’s military intelligence service, highlighted the threat of a hostile and unpredictable Russia, stressing that Sweden must be ready for any eventuality. "The moment the war fighting in Ukraine stops or reduces, we’re sure the Russians will come back to our neighbourhood," Nilsson said, referring to the potential for Russia to establish bases along its new front line with Finland, and even expand its presence in the Arctic.

Despite the shifting focus of Russian military assets, hybrid threats, including disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks, remain constant for Sweden.

Nilsson pointed to ongoing investigations into potential sabotage, such as recent cable breakages under the Baltic Sea, underscoring the persistent nature of Russia's hybrid warfare tactics. "We see patterns," Nilsson noted, adding that Sweden must remain vigilant in monitoring these developments.

While some have accused Sweden's defense officials of alarmism, the growing unease across Europe is palpable. The contrast in assessments of Russia's geopolitical ambitions is stark, particularly between the United States and European nations.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly downplayed the threat posed by Russia, often echoing Kremlin talking points, including his recent remarks suggesting that Putin seeks peace in Ukraine.

However, European leaders, particularly those in countries bordering Russia, view the situation differently. With Russia's history of aggressive actions, from Crimea in 2014 to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, they argue that security guarantees are vital to ensuring their safety. In response to growing fears, countries like Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia have taken proactive steps, enhancing their military readiness and defence spending.

Sweden, too, is not taking any chances. Although Nilsson believes that Russia is currently too depleted to wage large-scale warfare beyond Ukraine, he cautions that the long-term threat remains.

"Russia remains the military threat to Sweden," he warned, citing the nation's significant military assets, including warplanes, warships, and nuclear capabilities. "Once the war in Ukraine ends, Russia will re-establish its military presence near Sweden as soon as it can, and it will be more up to date and more adapted to battlefield experience."
