Sweden to provide humanitarian aid package for Ukraine ahead of winter

26 October 2024 19:22

Sweden has announced a humanitarian aid package for Ukraine, allocating a total of 110 million kronor (approximately $10.36 million) to support the country as winter approaches.

Of this amount, 50 million kronor ($4.71 million) will be dedicated to ensuring access to heating and electricity, as well as distributing food, hygiene products, medicines, and water, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media sources.

Additionally, 20 million kronor ($1.88 million) will be sent to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist internally displaced persons in their preparedness and protection during the winter months.

The aid package also includes 30 million kronor ($2.82 million) for demining efforts in Ukraine and 10 million kronor ($1.04 million) to support victims of violence, including those affected by sexual and gender-based violence.

On October 26, it was reported that G7 countries had finalized plans for a $50 billion loan to Ukraine, which will be financed through future proceeds from frozen Russian sovereign assets.

Earlier, the Swedish government had allocated 320 million kronor ($30.41 million) as part of a Nordic-Baltic aid initiative aimed at rebuilding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in preparation for winter. Minister for Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dusa emphasized the importance of this aid for supporting the energy sector and ensuring the well-being of Ukrainian citizens.

Since February 2022, Sweden has provided Ukraine with a total of 57.4 billion kronor ($5.45 billion) in humanitarian, military, and economic assistance, as well as support for reconstruction and reform efforts. With this latest package, Sweden's contributions to Ukraine's energy supply have exceeded 2.1 billion kronor ($199.5 million).
