Swedish top military official warns Russia could test NATO unity

12 May 2026 12:37

Sweden’s Supreme Commander, General Michael Claesson, has warned that the security situation in the Baltic Sea region is deteriorating and that Russia could attempt to test NATO’s unity sooner than expected.

In a recent interview, Claesson said that Moscow may seek to probe the alliance by targeting one of the Baltic islands, not necessarily to achieve a military victory, but to assess NATO’s response and expose potential divisions within the bloc.

He noted that a direct military defeat of NATO is unlikely, suggesting instead that Russia’s strategy could focus on undermining cohesion among member states.

“Since a military defeat of NATO is impossible, Russia may seek to undermine its unity and exploit potential vulnerabilities,” Claesson said, according to his assessment.

The Swedish military chief also warned that Russia may already be in a position to act while NATO and European countries continue strengthening their defence capabilities.

Claesson highlighted increased activity by Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” in the Baltic Sea, saying it contributes to heightened risks and potential escalation in the region.

He stressed that deterrence requires continued military preparedness across Sweden and neighbouring countries.

“To deter Russia, Sweden and its neighboring countries must continue to strengthen their armed forces, conduct exercises, and demonstrate their readiness for defense,” he said, adding that the regional security environment has worsened compared to previous years.
