Switzerland aims to deepen cooperation with NATO, EU while upholding neutrality
Switzerland has announced plans to enhance its defence collaboration with NATO and the European Union, emphasizing that such cooperation will be pursued “within the framework of neutrality,” Defence Minister Martin Pfister said.
Speaking at a press conference in Bern, Pfister underscored the importance of strengthening ties with neighbouring countries, as well as with NATO and the EU, to bolster regional security, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“It is crucial for Switzerland to strengthen cooperation with neighbouring countries, NATO and the EU, while respecting the framework of neutrality,” Pfister stated.
Although Switzerland remains outside both the EU and NATO, it has demonstrated alignment with Western policy responses, having adopted nearly all European sanctions against Russia following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict on February 24, 2022. Moreover, the Swiss Armed Forces have participated in 20 military exercises beyond its borders and four on Swiss territory during 2024, all involving NATO member states.
Switzerland’s stance reflects a nuanced approach that balances its historic commitment to neutrality with pragmatic engagement in regional defence matters amid evolving security challenges in Europe.
