Syria calls for stronger Russian support to rebuild national unity

31 July 2025 15:31

The Syrian government has expressed a strong desire for continued Russian support amid its ongoing efforts to restore the country’s unity, Asaad al-Shaibani, the country’s Foreign Minister said.

Al-Shaibani highlighted the complex challenges and threats facing Damascus, while simultaneously emphasizing the opportunity to rebuild “a united strong Syria,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

“Of course, we are interested in having Russia by our side on this path,” al-Shaibani affirmed, underscoring the strategic partnership between Damascus and Moscow during this critical period.

He further noted that Syrian authorities are actively implementing measures aimed at reuniting Syrians both inside the country and in the diaspora, striving to overcome divisions exacerbated by years of conflict.

Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani arrived in Moscow on July 31 for a pivotal visit underscoring Russia’s enduring influence in Syrian affairs. Given Russia’s historical role as a principal ally of the former Assad regime, Moscow is keen to maintain its strategic foothold in Syria’s evolving political landscape.

The administration of Acting President Ahmed al-Sharaa continues to confront significant challenges, and Russia’s involvement as a stabilizing force remains crucial for Damascus amid ongoing regional uncertainties. However, the precise trajectory of Russia-Syria relations in the current climate remains uncertain.

This high-level engagement follows closely on the heels of a recent discussion between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on July 28, where the two leaders addressed escalating tensions in the Middle East, further highlighting Moscow’s active diplomatic role in the region.

Tensions in Syria escalated sharply on July 13, as violent clashes broke out in the southern province of As-Suwayda between Arab tribal militias and local Druze self-defence units. In response to the unrest, Syria’s Interior and Defence Ministries deployed special forces to the provincial capital to reestablish order and initiated a comprehensive security operation across the region.

Simultaneously, Israel conducted airstrikes targeting Syrian military convoys, justifying the attacks as protective measures for the Druze population residing in the area. Additional Israeli strikes were reported against strategic installations in the capital city, Damascus, further intensifying the volatile security environment.

On July 19, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa declared a nationwide ceasefire in As-Suwayda province, attributing the cessation of hostilities to an internationally brokered peace agreement aimed at stabilizing the region.

Syria has experienced profound political upheaval since late 2024. In November of that year, opposition forces mounted a significant offensive against government-held territories. By December 8, rebel factions had entered Damascus, precipitating the resignation and subsequent flight of President Bashar al-Assad. This power vacuum enabled Ahmed al-Sharaa to assume de facto leadership.

Subsequently, on January 29, 2025, al-Sharaa formally proclaimed himself acting president of Syria, initiating a transitional period projected to span four to five years as the nation navigates its path toward political stabilization.
