Syria ready to receive Azerbaijani gas, eyes boost in power supply
Syria’s power infrastructure is now technically capable of receiving natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan, a move expected to significantly enhance the country’s electricity generation capacity.
The announcement was made by Mohammad Fadila, Director General of the Syria’s Corporation for Electricity Generation, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
According to Fadila, Syrian power plants are ready to receive Azerbaijani gas following maintenance work on domestic gas transmission infrastructure and the near-completion of a critical 20-kilometre pipeline connection to the Turkish grid via the Kilis–Aleppo corridor.
“This project carries significant strategic, economic, and humanitarian dimensions as part of efforts toward reconstruction and advancing stability,” Fadila said.
Khaled Abu Dey, head of the General Directorate for Transmission and Distribution of Electricity, added that the implementation of the project is expected to increase the daily electricity supply to approximately 10 hours in several Syrian provinces, beginning August 2.
According to the Syrian Ministry of Energy, the agreement provides for the daily delivery of roughly 3.4 million cubic metres of Azerbaijani natural gas. The imported supply will be used to power gas-fired plants and is projected to boost the country’s electricity generation capacity by an estimated 700 to 900 megawatts.
